My friends, all good things must come to an end, and so I have decided to part with my dear Space Wolves army with the help of eBay. My army, led by the fearless Wolf Lord Skarvald the Troll-faced has seen many great battles and has toppled all sorts of opponents at tournaments and friendly games. I'm not gonna deny that I'm a bit sad that I have to part with them, but I haven't fielded them in quite some time and my job search is taking me to the far fringes of eastern Asia where I doubt I'll have the time or chance to get back to this beloved hobby. I'm hoping that one of you might takes some pity on my bloodthirsty Space Wolves, fix 'em up, and field them once again in this new and shiny edition of Warhammer 40,000.
Hopefully you have read and enjoyed Part I where I listed some of the goals and concepts that I'm shooting for with this series and as to why I will not be using Codex: Chaos Space Marines as the core for my Alpha Legion list.

Evaluating Codex: Space Marines
The Space Marines have been out for quite a while now and everyone and their mother are familiar with their pros and cons, their strengths and weaknesses. The tricky part is evaluating said characteristics and figuring out what can be applied to the Alpha Legion doctrine - what works and what does not.
There is a caveat, however: Supposedly the 6th Edition version of Codex: Space Marines will be hitting the shelves by the end of the year, so this article may not be relevant for long. I doubt, however, that GW will tinker with their favorite poster child too much.

Pros: Tons of incredibly flexible and customizable options, Combat Squads mimics the division of small, Alpha Legion cells, Combat Tactics can be a great bait-and-switch mechanic, many options to play with USR abilities such as Infiltrate, Move Through Cover, Scout as well as the option of having your entire list Outflank. Because of Combat Squads and Chapter Tactics, there is a lot of strategy and trickery to consider before and during deployment, really allowing you to analyze the situation and change the way your army is split and deployed.
Cons: Really.. not a whole lot. The Codex is so big that there are plenty of options to consider and use and the real cons do not really apply to the Alpha Legion play style. By itself, Codex: Space Marines totally fits the doctrine of Alpharius' progeny. What is important to figure out is if it should be used as the core for the Alpha Legion list.

I really don't know where to begin with this Evaluation as there are some great Alpha Legion tidbits.

Combat Squads is just great and allows you to play your Alpha Legion list as a collection of small, but elite cells of special operatives by splitting your 10-man squads into two 5-man squads. With some Chapter Tactics this can be pretty interesting and especially useful in non KP missions. Consider the following:
Using Kor'sarro Khan's Chapter Tactics (All units can Outflank) can allow you to have a small squad with a Heavy weapon on an objective and then the other part of the squad is equipped for tank hunting (melta, combi-melta on the sergeant) and Outflanking to screw with your opponent's plans.. and nerves.

Chapter Tactics of note..

Without a doubt, the winner here is Kor'sarro Khan's ability to give your entire army (or all Space Marines, at least) the ability to Outflank! Just this little rule is enough to create an Alpha Legion army using the Khan as an HQ and unlocks so many options in addition to the huge list of units available to Space Marine players. I am not sure if taking Bikers is the thing for me - they are great and Khan lists have proven to be competitive in 6th Edition, yet I am not really convinced that they are Alpha Legion material. Giving the option of Deep Striking units such as Terminators or Sternguard Veterans the ability to Outflank is great in certain scenarios and situations where terrain or enemy deployment is making Deep Striking too dangerous or impossible.

Another interesting option to consider is Pedro Kantor whose Chapter Tactics give your army Stubborn and makes the amazing Sternguard Veterans scoring... AND whose Inspiring Presence works just like a Chapter Banner (+1A to all friendly units within 12''). Kantor is amazing in lists which utilize Drop Pod Assault as their main strategy. Drop Pods, however, are not to my liking - they make sense, but it is not how I envision the Alpha Legion. Best part about Pedro Kantor, however, is The Orbital Bombardment. Just because.

Changes 6th Edition Assaults on Turn 1 or the Turn You Infiltrate/Outflank - Unfortunately, some pretty cool units which were very popular in 5th Ed. are now... kind of questionable at best. Keyvaan Shrike's ability to launch crazy assaults with Fleeting Terminators, for example used to be awesome. Both this ability and the Fleet USR took a hit, though.

Special Mention:
+Thunderfire Cannon and Techmarine: Man, where do I even begin? As a Space Wolves player, the Surface Detonation (S6, AP5, Heavy 4, Blast); Airburst (S5, AP6, Heavy 4, Blast, Ignores Cover) and Subterranean Blast (S4, AP-, Heavy 4, Blast, Tremor) gets you a unit which can deal will all sorts of infantry. Tremor is just awesome against assaulty units as well. IN ADDITION, the Techmarine can repair vehicles and Bolster Defenses is just.. awesome - the ability to increase the cover save of a Ruined building in your deployment zone is fantastic and has great synergy with any Heavy Support units you may have, especially those with Stealth.
Thunderfire Cannon is.. like.. the one thing I'd totally steal and add to my SW list. With Allies, I guess I can now, huh? The Thunderfire Cannon's supporting element is, for me, the epitome of all of the tactical shenanigans of Codex: Space Marines. Three modes of fire -

This would definitely be a MUST for me if I were to play Codex: Space Marines, although I would have to go with the modeling of the Thunderfire Cannon differently. Not that I don't like it.. I was thinking of basically creating a Heavy Weapons platform with 3 Space Marines on it, each with a different kind of heavy weapon, all bunkered down and hiding behind some rubble.

+Torias Telion with Scouts and Aegis Defense Line - Sergeant Telion is yet another character who does not need much explanation as he has been proven to get shit done and even more so in 6th Edition. Before, he used to be a 50 pt. model people took for his rules and because his Stealth USR saved them ~30 points on Camo Cloaks. Now, with the FAQ on how Camo Cloaks work (they give +1 to cover save, rather than Stealth), your scouts led by Sergeant Telion will enjoy a static +2 cover save.. and you don't even need the Boltered Defenses from a Techmarine! So a nice, bigass unit of Scouts with a Missile Launcher, Camo Cloaks, etc. and enjoy.
Hide behind an Aegis Defense Line with an Icarus Lascannon and enjoy your S9, AP1, Skyfire shots.. at BS6 and with Precision Shots from Telion.
Or play it safe with the Quad Gun.

+Scout Bike Squad with.... Cluster Mines! - I'd field this (perhaps) barebones unit of 3 Bikers just so I can scare the shit out of my opponent when he triggers my trap ca-- I mean, my cluster mines. 2d6 S4 AP- hits is actually pretty decent if you think about it and with the current game mechanics, if you roll well you can glance the shit out of most vehicles. Honestly, I just want to see someone move flat out into cluster mines and get wrecked. Besides, Gretchin need to do their job. Actually, I'm not even sure if It's a Grot's Life works against Cluster Mines... Laying the field with traps is very Alpha Legion-y, so not taking the one option allowing you to do so would be a letdown.

For the purposes of "The Alpha Legiondary Journey" I hereby declare Codex: Space Marines fit for my preferred Alpha Legion list. But will it be the one Codex I choose to go with? We'll see..

Next time I'll go over Codex: Space Wolves..
The models look cool and what not. I don't really play the game and only know of one other person who partakes (@ Brian's A Gentleman's Ones) , but as a proud Bulgarian firstborn I really want to buy the entire range of Ottoman Empire ships, paint them beautifully, and set them afloat in my bathtub just so that I can pretend to be a Bulgarian Godzilla/Kraken monstrosity and crush, kill and destroy every single Ottoman ship.
Originally I was thinking of calling this segment "Alpha Legioning it Up", but I'm pretty sure the fact that English is not my native tongue isn't the only reason why this title is unpronounceable. Yeesh.
My name is Skarvald the Troll-faced and I will be your host. Haha.

Let's start with the foundation of what "The Alpha Legiondary Journey" is trying to accomplish:

GOAL:
The goal of "The Alpha Legiondary Journey" is supposed to create an Alpha Legion list that is fun to play
with and against, stay true to the design of the Legion and remains fluffy. I will be using 6th Edition rules to accomplish this and will aim to create a 2,000 point list from the ground.
Q: Why 2,000 points?
A: A 2,000 points list is a nice, large army that can fit a lot of fun components in it. There is plenty of space to include a plethora of guys, toys and other things without having to sacrifice a lot of interesting options for efficiency's sake. Reducing the list down to 1850 or even 1500 points for various events and tournaments will be possible, but we are not trying to limit ourselves here. 2000 points will give us the space AND freedom to be creative.

Q: Will you be using Allies, Modified Force Organization Charts and/or Forge World rules and models?
A: I will split this one into three..
Allies - YES: Oh, God. Definitely. I simply cannot a way around it besides using the Codex: Chaos Space Marines and spamming Cultist. I will not be doing that, actually. I'm also not going to be using the Chaos Space Marines codex at all, but I will justify this in a few.
Double FOC - NO: While at 2,000 points I am technically "allowed" to do so, Double FOC remains a questionable practice and something that I don't really like. I might consider it and do some "fun" lists in the future once I have some of the elements, but "Double FOC" is not something that I'll be going for.
Forge World - YES: Ah, the big one. YES. I am for Forge World? Why? Because Forge World models are gorgeous, have some pretty interesting rules and because people should embrace it. Not to mention that with the price-gouging of GW's prices, Forge World models seem more and more like the better option anyways. I will not be using a LOT from Forge World, but I expect this to change once the Alpha Legion gets its Horus Heresy treatment in a couple years. Currently I'm thinking of two models tops.

CONCEPT:
The
Alpha Legion epitomizes trickery, infiltration, outmaneuvering and
outsmarting and foot-slogging. While they are just as good (if not better) at prolonged,
direct combat, the Alpha Legion prefers to destroy from within, to
ambush and slowly chip away at the enemy and to manipulate using
subterfuge and propaganda. Information is crucial and the spy networks
organized by them are deep and complex. Basically, if each Legion was
represented by a god from the Norse Mythology, the Alpha Legion would be
Loki himself.
"Counts-As"/Interchangeable - If there is a Marine-based army whose style can be represented by more than one Codex, then it has to be the Alpha Legion. One of my main goals with this current Alpha Legion list and army is to create a foundation of units which can be used with more than one Codex. Currently I am looking at Codex: Space Marines; Codex: Chaos Space Marines and Codex: Space Wolves. The Alpha Legion have always been the most tactical fallen Marines. Many codices have a lot of fun and interesting ways of representing the Hydra's doctrine - from creating a Kor'sarro Khan list with tons of Outflanking due to his Combat Tactics, Combat Squad-ing Tactical Marines/Scouts and dropping elite Sternguard Veterans from the sky with Codex: Space Marines to all the infiltrating and Behind Enemy Lines fighting style of the Space Wolves..
In the next couple of posts I'll quickly evaluate a couple of the Codices which I think best fit the Alpha Legion style, choose the one I like the most and will ally Imperial Guard with it, because I consider I.G to be a necessary part of the Alpha Legion.

Chances are you already know what the Alpha Legion is all about. I actually jotted down a lot of my ideas like a year or so ago before 6th Edition's Codex: CSM even came out. A lot of my speculations and wish-listing was for nothing, it seems. Nonetheless, the Alpha Legion is about combining Power Armor and cheap, but elite infantry that Infiltrates, Scouts and catches the enemy completely unawares and with his pants down.

It's hard for me to choose which PA Codex would best represent the Alpha Legion play-style, strategy and mentality. Immediately, Codex: Chaos Space Marines stands out, though primarily because the Alpha Legion IS a Chaos Space Marine force to begin with. I tried and tried to force myself to like the Chaos Space Marine Codex. I really did. There are a lot of cool components about it - I like the ability to spam dudes in Power Armor and Cultists. And that's about it, really. My knowledge of 6th Edition is pretty limited, but every CSM unit has been dissected and over-analyzed by the community already - there are many losers and a few winners. Sadly, the winners are not those likely to wear the Hydra tattoo.

Pros: Cheap, customizable basic Chaos Space Marines, cheap and efficient Chaos Space Marine Bikers, Cultists.
Cons: The part of Codex: CSM that got the most "love" in 6th Ed. is not really Alpha Legion material: Icons, Marks and any units with Marks, including Psychic Powers, any Daemonic units/upgrades and Daemonic Vehicles (Defilers, Forge Fiends, Maulers, Hell Drakes) do not make a whole lot of sense in an Alpha Legion list. While the Alpha Legion is known to deal and use daemonic forces and tools, the theme that I want to pursue is that of a foot-slogging, inflitrating elite force which surrounds and dismantles the enemy piece by piece.
Sadly, it seems like there are a couple of really niche and "mandatory" units in the Codex: CSM which make the ruleset shine.. *cough*Hell Drakes*cough*, while other units get to sit on the bleachers and carve the Chaos Undivided symbols on all surfaces available.

Eternal Hunt's very own, converted Chaos Cultists!

Special Mention:
+ Warp Talons - At one point I was semi-seriously considering a minimal squad of Warp Talons to just drop in and Blind a unit,
but with Blind being an Initiative check (too random and unpredictable)
and Warp Talons counting as demons I just couldn't justify it. Also,
talk about a one-trick pony!
+ The Warpsmith was also a
cool idea, which I quickly realized was not going to work for me due to
the lack of vehicles I plan to have on the battlefield. Being able to
give vehicles Gets Hot!, though... Sigh. Such a shame - the model is
gorgeous.
+ Chaos Cultists, while cool lack any sort of
decent customization. I'm glad that Chaos Space Marines finally got
them, but with the addition to the Allies option there really is no
reason to take them - Imperial Guard and Tau are better choices.
+ Dark Apostle
also gets a special mention as a way to make Cultist cool and give them
that extra flavor. Unfortunately there seems to be a pattern here -
Games Workshop seems to be making a lot of exceptionally jaw-dropping
models which happen to have really, really sub-par rules.

As a matter of fact, if Codex: Chaos Space Marines was not so limiting I could easily see myself using some of the "Special Mention" units. Unfortunately, I cannot justify it.

The main issue with Codex: CSM is the lack of the very important USR's for the Alpha Legion: Scout and Infiltrate. Chosen used to have access to it back in 5th Edition, but 6th Edition stripped them of that privilege and now the only two (well.. 3) ways to give your units some Infiltrate shenanigans and that is through the Master of Deception Warlord Trait which is conveniently given to two special HQ Characters:
- Huron Blackheart, who is a well-rounded character with some minor psychic abilities, decent ranged attacks and decent close combat capabilities, but nothing to write home about. Okay, but Master of Deception is a fickle thing, allowing d3 units to get the Infiltrate USR.
- Ahriman himself, a powerful psycher dedicated to Tzeench - Not Okay, because Ahriman is allied with Tzeentch, also see Master of Deception
- You could also run a Warlord and hope to roll Master of Deception.....

In the end, all the cool things in Codex: Chaos Space Marines end up verboten and trying to stretch the few elements that make sense for an Alpha Legion feels more like an annoying, unnecessary obstacle rather than a list-building challenge to me. Oh, and there's also the thing about Allies..
I, still, to this day don't get why Imperial Guard are considered Allies of Convenience with Chaos Space Marines! There are plenty of common reasons for both armies to fight together, following the Chaos Gods being the most obvious one, for example. You know, basically the mirror to why the I.G fight for the Imperium - because they believe in the God Emperor of Mankind and hate Chaos.
It's possible to make it work. It's not hard, but once again.. - an annoying little detail.

TL;DR: Codex: Chaos Space Marines is a huge NO-NO for me all things considered. I wouldn't mind playing an all-Nurgle Force one day, but for the purposes of "The Alpha Legiondary Journey"
I've been absent, but I am alive. I'm back, but will be here less frequently. Why? Because I would like to give this blog a purpose and I want to give you guys only quality. Quality over quantity.
It has been a while, though. Here are some confessions to make in the meantime.

I still haven't played a real game of Warhammer 40,000 in 6th Edition. At all. I still have all of my Space Wolves and Orkz, but I just haven't had the chance.. OR the desire. Nearby GW and GW store has been changing faster than a a Cloudfin Raptor in a Simic-themed Evolve deck. Seriously, fuck that guy. And YES, I'm been dabbling in Magic: The Gathering, because it's a cool game and I'm good at it.

Honestly, though, my "6th Fu" is so bad that when a friend of mine asked me if I could sub for him at Adepticon 2013's Team Tournament I just couldn't do it. No experience, man. I didn't even go to Adepticon 2013.

Just in general, I suppose, my hobby has been lacking and in a dire need of a reboot. I tried to Warmachine rather than 40k and that worked for a while.

But I want my 40k, man. Which is why I'm back.

So what will I be focusing this time around?

A new army.
Well, sort of.

I will take you, guys, through the process of creating this new army. I will share with you my thoughts and ideas, my reasoning and believes behind all the decisions and concepts that I stick with and will inevitably ask for your very own contribution, ideas and suggestions to make this list better, stronger.. and even FLUFFIER. It's time to build ourselves.. AN ALPHA LEGION LIST!

Stay tuned. A new post will follow this one shortly.
Until then... stick around. Go get yourself a drink or something. Now, you might say "Whatever, Skarvald. Yet another 40k-themed blog? Why should I even care?!?"

Well, sure. It's a blog, or a bleeerg like I like to call it, but the Slaaneshi Whore Lord has a few things to say about the hobby and he certainly managed to amaze ME with the few articles he wrote for Wolves for the Wolf God. I'll be honest here and say that he actually had a whole score of things to say and share here, but I was the one who dropped the ball in a period of extreme busy-ness, overwhelmed by my very own hobby glory.

Here's the thing, though: 6th Edition is already upon us and the new Codex: Chaos Space Marine is juuuuust 'round tha corner. A lot of people are waiting for it to hit the stores, anxious to see what a 6th edition codex will look like, excited to start their very own Chaos warband or two or perhaps continue to bask in the GLORY of their long forgotten, dusty Chaos Space Marine minis.

Gone will be the days of "Counts As" Space Wolves armies, using Chaos miniatures.

Soon, Chaos will beckon.

And the Slaaneshi Whore Lord will be its Herald.

No, actually.. even before that - when the first "concrete" rumors and leaks flooded the blogosphere.

Before I added the side sponsons.. which were a PAIN to build.

So.. was the Land Raider Achilles an early sign for the Hull Points system - perhaps one of the biggest changes brought to us by 6th Edition? I think so.
But let me clarify the actual fact of the matter here:

Here are the early "Experimental Rules" of the Land Raider Achilles, as posted on the Forge World website as soon as the Land Raider Achilles was announced. Notice, for example, the original point cost of 300 points (compared to the actual, current point cost of 325 points.)

"... reduces the effects of all rolls on the damage chart made against it, by -1"

Before: Back then everyone was super excited, because it meant that a regular, non AP1 Glancing Hit couldn't even immobilize a Land Raider Achilles without actually destroying all of its weapons first, since a roll on the damage chart would have been at -3. Penetrating hits were only at -1, which meant that an actual, natural roll of a 6+ was needed to Wreck it. Add to that the immunity to the Lance and Melta special rules and the Land Raider Achilles became pretty resilient. This rustled the jimmies of a bunch of people who immediately yelled "OP! OP!", especially when it was announced that the Land Raider Achilles had the "Warhammer 40,000" stamp on it.

"reduces the effects of all rolls on the Damage chart caused by Penetrating hits by -1."

After: Shortly after the Experimental Rules were posted, there was an update (I think). I mean, I got the book pretty soon, so I also noticed it there. At first, the most obvious difference was the slightly gouged price of 325 points, but after a careful examination on my part I saw the changed wording of the Ferromantic Invulnerability special rule. It struck me as odd. Why would this amazing, super-special hull armor only work when it has been actually penetrated. Why didn't it affect Glancing hits or just ALL rolls on the Damage chart? Back then I saw it as a weird way to nerf the Land Raider Achilles by at least giving some armies the chance to deal with it somehow by Glancing it a bunch of times.

Using 6th Edition, though, it all makes sense. Glancing Hits no longer roll on the damage chart, they simply destroy one Hull Point from the vehicle. It is only Penetrating Hits that get to roll on the chart.
So it is possible that those responsible for the editing/rules of Imperial Armour Apocalype: Second Edition got a whiff of the new vehicle rules... pretty much a year before the actual release? We are constantly being told that Games Workshop and its sister company, Forge World, are pretty independent and separate and that the guys from FW have no idea about what's going on over at GW. It may be true.. but I still think it's weird and quite hard to believe, so I wouldn't be surprised if the book was written, or at least edited with 6th Edition in mind. Even if it was a year ago, I bet that coming up with a new Vehicle damage chart and the Hull Point system was one of the first things that was added to the book. It is just such an important, fundamental part of the game - there's no way that it was not a priority.

But then again knowing GW I wouldn't be surprised...

So whaddaya guys think? A possibility... or a coincidence?

We all know that Codex: Chaos Space Marines is already finished and it's
just a matter of time until it is released. The rumor mill is already
spinnin' with delicious tidbits and so far things are lookin' pretty
promising for the arch-enemies of the Loyalists.

And while I can all but speculate about the things in the Chaos Space
Marine codex I can at least jot down some of the more promising and
thematic units from Codex: Imperial Guard, which will be playing the
role of Special Operatives and various agents, indoctrinated and placed
by the Alpha Legion..

The
Alpha Legion epitomizes trickery, infiltration, outmaneuvering and
outsmarting.

CODEX: Chaos Space Marines

What's going to be in the new (rumored to be hard-cover) codex, what's going to stay the same and what new toys we'll be getting? Your guess is as good as mine, although there are already a bunch of juicy rumors dripping like melted cheese on a medium-rare steak. Cultists, new marks, new Land Raiders, the Dragon, Daemon Engines, new tables, new rules... oh my!

Staying Undivided

I think this is the most important part of the list-building process. The Alpha Legion is a legion undivided. They do worship Chaos, but they are not dedicated to a single god and I would even say that they don't bother with summoning daemons and other vile creatures of the Warp, because they are unpredictable and unreliable when it comes to precision strikes and years of perfectly-executed tactics. As such I will be doing my best to stick to the following limitations:

- Only Undivided models

- Very limited Daemonic presence

There are obviously a few things to think about when it comes to the composition of this list. It needs to be a very well-rounded list, because it is how the Alpha Legion works. This means plenty of shooting, enough assault, infiltration and of course - the presence of psykers and psychic protection. The strength of such a list would come from its multiple layers of hybridization. The opponent will have to pick from going after vehicles or infantry, and then this decision will be split between going after the Chaos Space Marine core of the list or the more vulnerable (but potent!) I.G stuff.

I will do my best to have as much 3+ bodies on the table as I have Guardsmen. I can actually see the Alpha Legion using Razorbacks if they have access to it and even some Rhino Rushing. We shall see.

- Keep it balanced!

And now.. for the I.G part:

HQ

Company Command squad:
The Company Command Squad is definitely a solid choice. It is
well-rounded and offers a LOT of support to the main Alpha Legion. How
you equip the squad and what juicy upgrades you grant them is actually
not that important. Keep 'em cheap, for all you need are..
+Astropath's Telepathic Relay
You add +1 to your Reserve rolls and the ability to re-roll outflank
sides is also amazing, because you'll be doing a lot of that. A 2+
rather than 3+ for your units to arrive on Turn 2 is nice, although not
as important, but it means that all of your stuff will arrive
automatically on Turn 3.
+Officer of the Fleet's Intercept Reserves,
makes it harder for your opponent's units to come from reserve, needing
a
4+ on Turn 2, and a 3+ on Turn 3, just like the good old days of 5th
Edition. Unfortunately things arrive automatically on turn 4, despite
any negative modifiers. I think....? The ability to re-roll outflank
sides is also amazing, because you'll be doing a lot of that.

The
Astropath and OotF are important, especially with how good flyers are
in 6th Ed. Remember that all Flyers HAVE to come from reserve, so any
chance of delaying them is worth its points. There are also other ways
to screw with your opponent's reinforcements by purchasing a:
- Land Raider Proteus (experimental rules here),
whose Explorator Augury Web adds another -1 to the opponent's reserve
rolls (so Turn 2 = 5+/Turn 3 = 4+) AND you can choose to re-roll your
Reserve rolls, even if they are successful, AND it has Scout AND it's an
Elites choice for Codex: Chaos Space Marines. Sure, it doesn't pack the
punch of some other Land Raiders, it is not an assault vehicle and can
carry only 8 dudes.. but it can get Ceramite Armour (immune to Melta
special rule)

There's also a rumor that in the new Codex, Undivided Chaos Lords get Inspiring Presence (Inspiring Presence - friendly units within 12" can use the warlords LD) command trait, and improved Reserve manipulation (from Faeit 212).
What "improved Reserve maniupation" means is a mystery, but it could
easily be another +1/-1 to your/opponent's reserve rolls and possibly
the ability to re-roll your own Reserves. Depending on what THAT is, one
of the Regimental Advisers might be obsolete, freeing you 30 points.
Such a warlord would be a MUST for an Alpha Legion-themed army.

Keep in mind, though, that I'm not 100% sure that the +1/-1 modifiers stack. The only precedent is taken from the I.G FAQ:
Q. If you take two Astropaths or two Oflicers of the Fleet, do their +1/-1 to reserve rolls stack? (p31). A. No.

I
still think that with the current way I have it, the modifiers would
stack, since they come from different abilities with different names,
from different units. Not stacking would be lamesauce.

+Ursarkar Creed's Tactical Genius
is also pretty obvious, though including him in your army will tip the
scales towards the I.G detachment and you need 2,000 pt., if you want
him and the Regimental Advisers from the Company Command squad. He's a
great leader, but you also would need a bunch of I.G squads to benefit
from his order shenanigans. Keep in mind that Tactical Genius allows you
to give the Scout USR to an infantry or vehicle unit in your army. So
you can even give Scouts to a big-ass unit of Chaos Space Marines.. or
whatever tickles your fancy. Heh.
Do not bother with Krell. He's not worth it in this list.

+Last but not least is the Primaris Psyker.
The Primaris Psyker is awesome, because his ability to grab Telepathy
and swap both of his meh powers, since Lightning Arc sucks and
Nightshroud is situational and too random. Using the Primaris Psyker
pretty much assumes that he's attached to a Psyker Battle Squad. You
take the Primaris Power (Psychic Shreak - 12'' witchfire. Roll 3d6,
subtract target's Ld and you deal that many wounds, no armor or cover
allowed) and roll for a random power.. because they are ALL good and
WILL benefit you greatly. You really want Terrify, though.. which combos
greatly with the Psyker Battle Squad's Weaken Resolve. No unit is safe
from your psychic shenanigans then.
While
this unit might be incredibly cheesy (now even more than ever..) it
actually makes sense in the Alpha Legion army. The Alpha Legion is
famous for using psykers for intelligence, spying and all sorts of vile
things.
Marbo epitomizes the whole infiltration, sleeper cell agent-doctrine.
He's the sneakiest, the trickiest of them all and has all the powers
cherished by the Alpha Legion. He's Fearless, Stealth, Move Through
Cover, Hit and Run, has Fleet and basically can Deep Strike wherever he
wants to, without scattering. What makes him even better, though is his
friggin Demolition Charge, which.. by the way have gotten waaay better!
Assault 1, One Shot, 6'' range S8, AP2, LARGE BLAST, on a model with
BS5. That's pretty amazing. Use Marbo as a one-trick pony. Get him in
cover and within an inch of a delicious target (Preferably Paladins -
ignores their armor, FnP and causes Instant Death) and drop the
template. Hope for the best. On average, 2/3's of the time it will
scatter 2''. So hopefully plan for that. IF Marbo survives the next
turn.. well.. consider yourself lucky and just do what Alpha Legion does
best.. wreak havoc.

+Psyker Battle Squad:
Basically what I wrote for the Primaris Psyker. They work well-enough

in 2,000 pt. games, accompanied by the PP dude.

+Al'Rahem:
First things, first: Al'Rahem allows you to have a bunch of squads
belonging to his Platoon to outflank. They MUST Outflank, which means
that they don't count towards your Reserve limitations. That's nice. You
can easily get carried away and invest a lot of points in Al'Rahem's
platoon, but with 6th Ed and all of your Reserves shenanigans you'll be
able to have a much more reliable outflanking unit, potentially arriving
automatically on Turn 2 and re-rolling Outflanking sides! Al'Rahem's Like the Wind!
order is pretty cool, actually - lets you shoot and then run. Nice for
Rapid Firing some lasguns at a unit and then retreating, making assaults
less possible. Also.. his weapon is nasty. Power weapon that causes
Instant Death? Delicious. Yeah, he's a wimp in Close Combat, which is
why you make sure to stick a Commissar with Al'Rahem to accept
challenges. Then try to Precision Strike important models and take them
out of commission. Forever.

I said, I have no idea how I want to run my Platoon Command Squad. Do I
want smaller, elite units or a bigger blob? It all depends on what the

sweet. AND they have Skyfire and ignore Jink cover saves. So that's 12 twin-linked S7, AP4 Hydra autocannon shots and then 9 S5 AP4 heavy bolter shots. Great

Alpha Legion?Hey there, my fellow bloggers and blog lurkers! Long time no see, I suppose. It has been.. errr.. more than a month since I last posted here. A series of unfortunate events (sucky primer, a third of my paints drying or exploding, etc. etc) managed to throw a wrench in the clockworks of my hobby mojo at the very beginning, proving once again that Skarvald the Troll-faced is unable to hobby by himself.

No, seriously. Bad things happen whenever I finally sack up and start painting, folks. Add a few weeks worth of 100+ degrees and insane humidity in the Chicagoland and I think you get the picture. No hobby for Skarvald.
But not all is lost. My Khador WILL be painted one way or another. Probably not this month, because I'll be saving money for a NEW super secret hobby (Spoilers: I'll be making mead) and of course for the inevitable 6th Edition Starter Set and my next 40k Army...

But first..
6th Edition: I still don't have the book. I haven't had the chance to go over the rules too much, except for randomly browsing the freebooted .pdf. Sue me. The book is $75. I'm waiting for the chibi booklet with all the important rules innit.
I still haven't played a game using the 6th edition rules, but I feel like I have a firm grasp of the rules. Some things I like, some things I love. Some things I dislike.. and some things I hate. But I'll get used to it, I suppose. Do I have an option? Overall I like the general feel of this new edition... We'll see if this still hold when I start playing it! :D

New 6th Edition Army:
I already have two armies: Orkz and Space Wolves.. so why a third army?
1) Orkz: Every time I look at my pile of Ork Boyz I just lose all desire to play them. They were my first army and I think I have 4 different Ork Squads painted TOTALLY different. Seriously - different greens, different shades, washes, different levels of effort. I kind of want to strip 80% of them and to start over.. but then I remember how painful it is paint Orkz. I still love painting Ork vehicles, though.
Orkz got a decent buff with how much easier it is to kill vehicles in close combat, although no consolidation still sucks. Random Assault distances are a pain. Still no Psyker support, except by allying a Farseer which is lame. Don't get to benefit from the new Psychic Powers.. at all. In general, shooty Orkz hiding in terrain and eventually counter-charging seems to be the best option and while this is a playstyle that I enjoy with my Orkz I'd rather wait for their new Codex in a coupe of years.
It's a shame. I have an unpainted Stompa, a Battlewagon, like 20 Burna boyz, Nobz, Deff Koptas.. etc. etc. etc. And HOTPanda is sending me a box of Killa Kans as well. Grrr...

WAIT. THIS JUST IN. THE MAILMAN JUST DELIVERED THE BOX OF KILLA KANS!!!
2) Space Wolves - I have a Land Speeder, a Land Raider Crusader and a Land Raider Achilles that have yet to be painted. The new Citadel paint range killed me, man. I just don't have the will to start over, because it's impossible to mimic my current paintjob. I also want to repaint my Thunderwolves so badly. I dunno. I still want to play them, but I don't have a reason to expand the army anymore. We'll see..

And now for the new army that I really want to start..

Chaos Space Marines! Wooot! Even more power armor, baby!
And more importantly.. it will be Alpha Legion!
Now, I know that there will be no Legion-love in the new CSM codex, so I'll have to be extra creative with which units I pick. One is for sure, though - the list will be heavy with Allies.
Imperial Guard, to be exact.
We all know that Codex: Chaos Space Marines is already finished and it's just a matter of time until it is released. The rumor mill is already spinnin' with delicious tidbits and so far things are lookin' pretty promising for the arch-enemies of the Loyalists.

And while I can all but speculate about the things in the Chaos Space Marine codex I can at least jot down some of the more promising and thematic units from Codex: Imperial Guard, which will be playing the role of Special Operatives and various agents, indoctrinated and placed by the Alpha Legion..

While they are just as good (if not better) at prolonged, direct combat, the Alpha Legion prefers to destroy from within, to ambush and slowly chip away at the enemy and to manipulate using subterfuge and propaganda. Information is crucial and the spy networks organized by them are deep and complex. Basically, if each Legion was represented by a god from the Norse Mythology, the Alpha Legion would be Loki himself.
Next post I'll share with you some of my ideas.. Until then.. uuuh... imagine the awesomeness of the first Forge World Horus Heresy book coming out this August?
So most of use have gotten around to looking through the new rulebook, and after having some time to mull it over just about everyone has their opinion on the 6th edition of 40k. My personal opinion is that the assault phase might just not be worth it anymore. Now there are some things here and there that have been tweaked that you might not have noticed, or haven't run the math on quite yet, so that's what this post is going to be all about. This isn't going to just be all about doom and gloom, or how I "think" something has been "nerfed," I am going to be delving straight into the facts.

C-c-c-combo Charge!

First off, we should all know by now, even if you haven't picked up the book, that "assaulting" has been renamed "charging," and is now subject to a random 2d6 dice roll instead of a straight 6". This change is something I greatly dislike, in fact I have only played less that a dozen games of 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy since they adopted the rule and in that game system it made more sense with the back and forth charge range shuffle that plagued previous editions. Each time you add in more random elements it diminishes the effect of player skill, because there are less things a player has control over. A 6" charge out of cover is more reliable than a 2d6 inch charge, so a player doesn't have to rely on luck and they can solely focus on choosing to attack the correct unit. It also has the same effect on the person being charged if their opponent happens to roll incredibly long charges, and subsequently wipes them off the table. In Fantasy this is diminished slightly by getting the charge only giving you 1 combat res (equal to 1 kill), while in 40k it can potentially double a unit's number of attacks. There is no amount of skill that can made up for if you roll a 2 when you needed a 4, or if your opponent somehow always gets crazy 11 or 12 inch charges. Someone might say, "But this is a dice game, you have to be used to being lucky or unlucky that is just the way it works!" To that person I would say, take a minute and look at how the dice are handled in other phases of 40k. Every time you attack someone you can potentially roll 10 or more dice, heck Orks can get up to 120 in just a single unit. When you are rolling large numbers of dice, like the 20 or so from a unit rapid firing, with 4 or more units per turn, we are looking at potentially hundreds of dice being rolled over the course of a game. With that many dice being rolled luck can really start to even out. Not so when 2 dice are used to settle the outcome. We have all had those games where one assault is the difference between victory and defeat, in fact some armies rely on their one assault unit to come in and reliably get the job done. Some people rely on great positioning to make sure that their fragile shooting army is never in range to be assaulted. What are we going to say to these two people? "Oh you should have rolled better," or "You should have known your opponent was going to get that charge when he started way over there," isn't that a bit ludicrous? I just KNOW that the whole time in the back of someone's mind they are thinking to them self, "But the average of 2d6 is 7, that is better than the 6 from before." (I know it's not you, it is that other guy). That statement isn't false, but it is misleading. Let me drawn an analogy: suppose you only have $100, and I tell you that you can give me that $100 and I will give you $1000....or you can take a 1/1000 chance to get $1,000,000 but if you fail I get to keep all of your money and you get nothing. Which one would you take? They are the exact same average, but I am guessing you all take the automatic $1000. See how averages can be misleading?

The new charge system isn't so much about average distance as it is about % chance of success.

Assault phase issues continue with people who have fleet of foot. No longer does fleet let you run and assault in the same turn. Instead it lets you reroll one or more of the dice when you run or charge. Fleet charge distance went from 7-12" to 2-12". Now at first I thought that this was horrendous, and it is bad don't get me wrong, but after I did a bunch of math it isn't as bad as I initially thought. It all comes down to the specifics of how the reroll lets you chose to reroll a single dice if you want. So if you get 6-1, you can keep the 6 and reroll the 1. The fact that it isn't an all or nothing is huge and greatly changes how the curve looks (I haven't seen a correct one yet on any other site). In fact it almost makes the % chance become a straight line. It ends up that on numbers 8-12 is about 10% less likely to happen than a 6+d6, a 7 is 15% less likely a 6 is a 92% chance of success, and all the others are pretty much 100%. The real kicker is fleet in comparison to a "normal" charge, where having fleet greatly increases you chance of success at those low "I should make this but getting unlucky looses me the game" numbers. In the end with fleet you get around 2 more inches at the same % chance of success as a unit without fleet (note this probably isn't 2 more inches on average, averages are bad remember!). I haven't done the math yet (as there are over 45,000 combinations), but after looking at this I expect that fleet will be even MORE of an advantage when assaulting through cover.
So which dice do we reroll and which die do we leave? The answer is pretty simple, actually, if you use some math. Any time the dice is a 1-3 you pick it up and reroll it, no questions asked. If you have a 4 and a lower dice and you need a 10 (wow you play risky) it is the same to pick up both or just reroll the low dice and hope for a 6. If you have only 4+ just reroll your lowest dice, but if you rolled that high and you still failed maybe you need to rethink your strategy.
Assaulting through cover has changed a lot compared to 5th edition too. Instead of 2d6 pick the one highest it is now 3d6, pick the two lowest. Those fleet rerolls are going to be huge here. Players can feel pretty safe about having their units 6" behind terrain as rolls of 6 or 7 are going to be considered very lucky. With the change to rapid fire weapons you can expect to see people back up when they are in terrain both whittling down their opponent and knowing they are almost immune to being charged in return. In the end charging though cover is going to be a little more forgiving distance wise than it was in 5th edition, but I know I won't be relying on those 6 or 7 inch charges unless my units have fleet.

Like it or not the game has been changed, and we all have to deal with it. While I personally think changing assault distances to a random 2d6 roll is a mistake, because it can potentially leave the entire game up to a single roll of the dice, I just really want to know why they wanted to "fix" what has been working. Especially since they made the shooting phase a lot more "safe." It's going to ruin a few games on both sides of the board, I just hope it doesn't put as sour a taste in my mouth as it did for Fantasy.Frozencorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05999979343225516499noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423274338242244569.post-22388964788878741252012-06-22T02:55:00.000-07:002012-06-22T02:55:37.454-07:00Putting the Pain in Painting..
Sometimes the Hobby Gods simply don't feel like being on our side. Judging by the series of unfortunate events that have been happening to me these past weeks it seems like I have upset them... by actually feeling inspired and wanting to hobby.

I know right?

First, I had to experience first-hand what happens when you try to prime a model that has not been washed properly. Had to strip the paint off Black Ivan...
... which turned out to be a success!

Then I spent ~$100 on the NEW Citadel paints, a few nice paint brushes, a paint palette and some primers.. Ended up not being satisfied with the way P3 Black Primer covers metal (although this time there's no rubbing off resin), so Black Ivan is currently in for another Simple Green bath. Gah...
I mean, this time it was much better, but I just need a good coverage on the metal parts, because they are all super sharp and bedazzled with detail, so I can't have the paint cheap.. No, sir. I'll be using the Krylon Black Primer from now on. Have to order that from the manufacturer's website, though, since it's no longer in most stores...

Oh, and whaddaya know? The one day I really, really, really felt like painting I realized that I had left my newly acquired paints in my friend's car.... That was more than a week ago.
Now, weather has been pretty crazy here in Chicagoland. We're talking crazy humidity and high 80's-90F temperatures. It gets even worse inside a black car..
And of course many paints melted as the new shitty Citadel paint pots warped and paint leaked and dried up. Seriously! Even bored the incident I had trouble closing the new paint lids - even on paints that I had just opened to see the color inside. It's not like I was a savage and had dried paints around the ring of the lid, which would prevent it from closing properly. Nope. Some paints were literally untouched and still died on me. Below is a picture of the paints that were completely useless. Notice the plastic tray which I used as a paint palette once - it was also in the bag. Notice the warping..

I'm very disappointed. :( Looks like I'm going to have to splurge again on paints, huh? Seriously, what a fucking disaster. And of course the only paintbrush that got ruined in the whole mess of dried paint and leakage was my Kolinsky brush. Literally no other brushes were even touched by this cesspool of failure. Just my awesome brush. That was pretty cool. I think I managed to save some of the other paints that were in the car by adding some paint retardant/thinner... whatever the !@#$%^& it is. So hopefully that helps. The new Dry paints are hilarious when they are all dried up..

Oh! Oh! And to top it off, I really wanted to do some basing on the two 'jacks that I have painted, you know? Then I realized that I had forgotten my basing materials in Frozencore Joe's car. So a week or so ended up being wasted on stuff being stuck in people's cars.

Not a good week for Skarvald. Not a good week indeed.

Now, I was very unsure when I dropped the model in Simple Green.
I have used Simple Green to clean metal Games Workshop models and even an Ork Stompa, always with great results, but had never used the concentrated solution to clean Privateer Press' resin/plastic models. Even some pretty thorough Google Fu revealed only promises that Simple Green should work on resin/plastic models without melting the model itself.
The issue is, of course, that the resin/plastic which Privateer Press uses for their newer models is still relatively new and I'm guessing that not a lot of people have had to deal with such an issue..

Well I had to.. ;(

And, man, is Simple Green awesome!

After 20 hours of soaking in Simple Green concentrate..

This is my Black Ivan model after approximately 20 hours spent inside concentrated Simple Green.
I took him out and gave him some scrubbing with an old brush and both the paint and primer simply disintegrated. I knew that the paint on the metallic parts would come off easily, but I was still very surprised with the results..

Now, keep in mind that this model was dunked in Simple Green a few hours after it was primed and that it was not cleaned in soapy solution before it was primed... a mistake which I'm never making again! If you have an older model, depending on the paint and primer used the results may not be the same and you might see some primer taint, which is when the primer gets inside the miniature and dyes it a certain color.

I'm going to leave Black Ivan in the solution for, oh I dunno, 8 or so more hours and then I'll drop him in a soapy solution for another 8 hours to make sure that all of the chemicals from the Simple Green are not present on the model when I prime him... AGAIN.Skarvald the Troll-facedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00850398881112778705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423274338242244569.post-52396681988507024142012-06-11T01:08:00.001-07:002012-06-11T01:08:14.976-07:00Switching from Warhammer to Warmachine: I Just Lost the Game!In what might turn out to be a pretty interesting series of articles, I'm going to share with you my experience of slowly departing from my days of shouting "WAAAAAGH!" and gradually getting to know the glory of Warmahordes. While I still love Warhammer 40,000 and even Warhammer Fantasy I can't help but feel alienated by Games Workshop's policies and just general business presence. I could go on and on about the things that went wrong, but I don't want waste your time with my rants.
It is what it is.

And now.. Warmachine!

If leaving the Warhammer 40,000 scene and getting into this whole Warmachine business has taught me ONE thing, then it is the following: I am no longer the top dog. Gone are the days of me knowing the outcome of a game long before it even began. I can no longer underestimate my opponents. I don't have a superior understanding of the rules which can give me an advantage against my opponents. I no longer look at an opponent's list and see all the wrong choices. I can't win games by making mistakes or expecting my opponent to make more mistakes than me. The list goes on..

I guess what I'm trying to say is that.. there is challenge for me in Warmachine. I might sound a little snobbish at first, but 40k had been very stale for me.. for quite a while, actually. I did keep on trying to motivate myself by thinking big. I wanted to have an army of 100 Deff Koptas.. but that never panned out. I wanted to re-do my Space Wolves - to finally highlight them and to get my army up in points. I wanted to have an Apocalypse-ready army of Space Wolves. That's probably never going to happen with the current prices on things and the fact that there's no way I can duplicate the paint scheme for my armies anymore. But I digress. Again.

So true..

Like I said..
I am no longer the top dog.
I don't have the confidence that I'm going to win anymore.
I do win some of my games, though!
But then I lose just as many. I lose a lot.
I make mistakes.. and I lose.
I get outplayed and outsmarted.. and I lose.
I decide no to boost that one attack.. and I lose.
I become too confident and reckless.. and I lose.

There has been a whole lot of losing as I'm dealing with the learning curve of this game. That was not the case of my Warhammer 40,000 days in which my Orkz dominated the Ultramarines and Necrons of my gaming buddies. Hm, I guess my whole wargaming career so far has been an avalanche of success due to a lack of challenges. Oh, I've had my ass handed to me more than once, naturally.. but not enough. Once again, this is not the case.

So.. I've been learning how to lose properly while enjoying the game as much as I can.
I can't say that I don't play to win. I enjoy winning! Victory achieved by outplaying and outmaneuvering your opponent is awesome.. Which is why Warhammer 40,000 was getting boring - victories were just victories. I wasn't getting anything out of winning anymore, I wasn't losing enough to learn from my mistakes and when I did lose it was more often than not due to time, a rules dispute or Matt Ward.

Of course, saying that I don't mind losing would be a lie. Losing still really rustles my jimmies sometimes and I mean.. that's normal. I put a lot of thought into the game and I really do my best, but sometimes even my best is not enough. I'm still learning, though, and will be learning for a long time.
There are so many armies out there and just changing a warcaster or a warlock completely changes everything. So many lists to win and lose against, hahaha...
I've been learning how to lose. I always do my best and when I do
lose a game (again - that happens a lot!) I always try to leave the
store with at least one important lesson learned.

I have made it my
mission to only feel defeat if after a game I cannot see my own mistakes
and the things I could have done better. That's why I really like
Warmahordes, guys. Even losing is awesome!

Here are some of the lessons I have learned by losing..

Charging pStryker with pSorsha when Stryker has 20 ARM, even if made Stationary is a bad idea..

Relying too much on 'jacks and not enough on the Old Witch's toolbox to save her when being surrounded by Mercenary Steelheads, when an Iron Flesh and dropping a Murder of Crows on her could have saved her..

Being too aggressive with Scrapjack and getting it killed on turn 2 on more than one occasion.

Putting too much focus on 'jacks while preparing for a possible charge on a Getorix after a nice Gallows without boosting the attack roll with the Old Witch, causing Gallows to miss.

Allowing pSorsha to get knocked down by slammed 'jacks.

So far all of the games that I have played have had that "ARGH!" moment. I bet you know what I'm talking about - it's the turn you fuck up. You either forget to move, shoot, boost or you fail to allocate your resources properly. Or you fail to see a way out of a situation. "ARGH!" moments are always different as as long as you keep them that way and avoid making the same mistakes you should pat yourself on the back, because avoiding making the same mistakes is what makes us better gamers.

So.. that's it from me.. for now.

And until then,
Keep on losing!
I was all excited about finally painting Harkevich's favorite 'jack.

Primed it black, using Privateer Press' Formula P3 Black Primer.
That's Negro Imprimador in Spanish for you, folks. Sounds intimidating, doesn't it?
Wait a second.. I thought the adjective was supposed to be after the noun..

It was my first time priming with a P3 Primer and I was anxious at first. The weather outside was pretty hot, I suppose and it was slightly windy, but after shaking the can for ~1 minute I started priming and everything seemed alright.. The primer went on very smoothly and dried fast just like GW's (more expensive) Chaos Black Primer.
I was originally supposed to pick up a cheap-o Flat Black Krylon primer, but the nearby store was out of it, so I picked P3's Primer instead...

I started painting, following Hand Cannon Online's Tutorial: Basics – Back in Black: Painting Black Armour. I covered the model with a nice coat of Thamar Black (also my first P3 paint!) and started with the first coat of two-brush blending Coal Black on the armor plates, when I realized that I need a better brush for the actual blending part. So then I decided to start with the foundation for the rusty metal parts. There were a few spots that were difficult to reach with the sponges, so I decided to use a stippling brush.

And then when I applied slightly more pressure... the paint.. and the primer came straight off, revealing the grey resin/plastic underneath. Applying pressure with the tip of my fingernails also scratched the paint and got rid of the primer. I don't know what to think of it..

Was it the weather? Was it the primer? Did I not wait long enough for the primer to dry?

I suppose I should have cleaned the model with some soap water beforehand.. right?
But then again I didn't do that for my previous Warjacks and they were fine. I tried scratching the paint, and a lot of pressure is needed to show even a hint of grey...

I was just not feeling comfortable with the result, so I decided to throw the model in some Simple Green for a day or two and then see what happens... I'll give it a nice soap bath and I'll scrub it diligently with an old toothbrush.. and I'll be doing the same with all of my Privateer Press models.

Right now I've got Scrapjack soaking in a soapy solution and will try to prime it for tomorrow.
I have Flat Black Krylon, so hopefully things will be alright.Skarvald the Troll-facedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00850398881112778705noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423274338242244569.post-24416130339543804642012-06-07T03:20:00.002-07:002012-06-07T03:20:37.196-07:00The new 11th Company Podact is Out! I'm pretty excited to announce that The 11th Company Podcast just released their 120th episode, titled Episode 120: Dive Bomb for Paint Scores!
Well, what does that mean? Well, you should totally go and check it out,
give it all your ears for its entire duration simply because the 11th
Company Podcast is awesome. You don't really need any other reasons.

Like I mentioned last time, Pat was kind enough to invite me to his Podcast and I just had to say yes. Now that I'm listening to it, it's kind of cool how many topics we were able to cover in ~14 minutes!

Download or stream the podcast to listen to me stutter about:

- The new Ork Flyers
- The future of Flyers in 6th Edition
- The quality of the recent White Dwarf magazines
- Puppets War's Flying Coffin Orcoplane
- Special Operations: KILLZONE and the part I played in it's development

Tell me what you think!

P.S:<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}"> The interview is
around 14 minutes long (starts at 3:28:44 and ends ~3:42:40) and you
should totally go check it out if/when you have some spare time.
Woohoo!Yes, I realize that the title sounds like something out of Goatboy's Extra 40k Thoughts but for the sake of my sanity and due to me being tired and lazy I'll just stick with this nonsensical, unproductive title.
Let's just say that today I didn't have a case of the Mondays. Let me start with the most recent thing:

1) I got interviewed today by The 11th Company Podcast! Again (I was in Episode 101: Now with 3 digits! as well :P) Pat sent me an e-mail a few days ago asking if I would like to chat with him about the new Ork Flyers which came this month and naturally I was all for it. While blogging is my preferred method of expressing my thoughts and ideas I actually like the podcast format. Maybe it was just because I had stuff to talk about. I mean, I talk about this hobby all the time with my friends, it's not unlike that, right? Pat and I talked about the new Ork Flyers, Puppets War' newest plane, Special Operations: KILLZONE (and my involvement with the project), our gaming communities and the newest White Dwarf.. +/- a few other hobby stuff.

It went for quite a while, actually, so hopefully you guys will enjoy it if you have the time! You know you want to listen to my soothing Bulgarian accent!

20 Paints!

2) Hobby Splurge! And by that I mean, I spent a good chunk of my paycheck for some necessary hobby materials. If you remember my guide on painting green Khadoran warjacks, I mentioned that it was all using the NEW Citadel paints of which I owned none. Thus, it was time to splurge on all of the colors I needed. I desperately needed some primer and because I couldn't find any Krylon Flat Black primer I decided to give Privateer Press' Formula P3 Black Primer. I mean, it was $10 but that still a lot cheaper than GW's can of primer. I don't doubt that it will do a great job with covering my models. So far I have only good things to say about PP's models, rules and policies. Got exactly 20 paint pots, but I just know that in the future I'll need more. It's the way the cookie crumbles. And I actually don't even know what this idiom means... I do like cookies, though.
Then I also managed to snipe the last blister of Winter Guard Infantry (10), officially maxing out my unit of Winter Guard Infantry to a Leader and 9 Grunts + Unit Attachment and Officer + Kovnik Joe. I just need 2-3 Rocketeer dudes, but they are not a priority right now.

3) Played some games of Warmachine against my buddy John.
A. I lost a 15 pt. game with the Old Witch versus Drake McBane..
... in which I learned that, once again, the Witch is not ideal for small games.
... in which I learned that, although totally capable of scrapping two Nomads, the Behemoth is not enough shooting firepower to deal with a unit of Helberdiers and Cavalry.
... in which I learned that I actually need some accurate firepower to kill models as they are advancing towards me and especially after the turn I feat. A unit of Widowmakers and/or Widowmaker Marksman would have been ideal for this.
... in which I learned that I need to play it less aggressively with Scrapjack. I need to learn to Prowl with him in a safe position. Instead, he got charged with a Flank bonus and lost both of its arms. : (

- Behemoth

+ Destroyer

+ Widowmakers

B. Won a 20 pt. game with a hilarious Karchev the Terrible list, by towing a Destroyer, a Black Ivan and a Juggernaut against a 3 different Titans and Xerxes..

... in which I learned that, once again, Warbeasts are so much better when shit hits the fan than Warjacks.

... in which I learned that I need more 'jacks with Reach, because walls are annoying and I can't charge through them with my .5'' reach. When is the plastic/resin Spriggan coming out? :(

The lovely doughnut-hatin' robot-lover Panda of the hot variety is
celebrating his 200th blog post with a schweeet giveaway and the more
people subscribe to his blog by a certain date, the sweeter the prize
will be.

I'm posting this to promote HotPanda's blog, which is an awesome blog with haikus and sweet painted models and what-not. Plus, I won part of his 100th post Giveaway by getting a sweet voucher, which I used to by the Warhammer 40,000 25th Anniversary model. It's only fair I tell people about this giveaway, I suppose. So yeah. Go and check out his blog.

I enjoy reading HotPANDA's posts! I have this feeling that we're very similar in the way we express ourselves and although I've never met this strange, strange Canadian fella,I just have this feeling that we could be awesome gaming buddies, ya know? Too bad he is in Canada, though. His fear of donuts is the reason he is exiled so far away from the U.S. of A. and its Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donut minefields..
Seriously. Sometimes I have to watch my step. There are donuts everywhere.
Skarvald the Troll-facedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00850398881112778705noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423274338242244569.post-55968468439930383112012-05-29T18:39:00.000-07:002012-05-29T18:39:12.132-07:00Khador Warjacks painted with new Citadel Paints! This weekend I met with Brian from A Gentleman's Ones for some much-deserved hobby time and for the first time since I've know Brian we actually hung out for a reason that was not terrain-building or Special Operations: KILLZONE. And it was Glorious!

Those of you who read my blog on a regular basis know that I don't usually post about my painted models simply because.. well.. I don't paint a lot. It's not because I can't or I don't want to - it's just that whenever I start an army I can never decide how to paint it. I'm very familiar with color theory and the different types of brushes and paints, mind you. It's just my indecisiveness and inability to commit to a decision that usually leads to a lot of my stuff being factory gray. That is why I decided to let Brian teach me how to paint my Khadoran army. His stuff is always so astonishing and from the few times I've seen him paint, his entire process seems so spontaneous and carefree. I wanted my hobby to be like his, so I made the trip to his place with "Frozencore" Joe to get stuff done!

Green has always been my favorite color and I wanted my Khador stuff to be green. It's not the most original idea, but I like the look of it, so I wanted to do that. I wanted my army to be dirty, gritty and covered with rust and dust from months and months of constant warfare in the trenches. I didn't want pristine-looking 'jacks, I wanted them scratched and damaged, but still ready to punish the enemies of the Motherland!

After I explained to Brian what I wanted, he went and primed the models. He grabbed the Destroyer and I got to paint the Juggernaut. The rest is magic..

What you see below is the result of ~3 hours of painting. There are a lot of touch-ups, highlights and other things to add and fix on the models, but for now I am definitely happy with the results.

Destroyer and Juggernaut - 80% done!
OH! AND THEY ARE ALL PAINTED WITH THE NEW CITADEL PAINTS!!!

Priming: The models were primed black, using Krylon Flat Black Primer, but honestly any black primer will do. Then they were barely hit with a very dark green primer, but it was almost unnoticeable. It is not necessary.

Watered-down Rhinox Hide base paint was then applied to the model to give some of the recesses that brownish tint. It wasn't applied over the whole model, just in the recesses to give them some definition.

Rust effect: The following colors were then added to the models using sponges, but I'm sure that stippling will do the same job. But sponging is way more exciting. Obviously focus on the areas that are metal - the joints, the legs, under the various armor plates, the weapons, the exhausts, the little boiler hatches, etc. etc. Feel free to rust-up the armor plates as well, but only if you plan to leave some of those areas untouched when you add your base colors. I did that, but then I ended up covering most of it with green anyways.. 4 paints were used for the rust effect, each one applied with a sponge, starting with a generous amount of Doombull Brown layer, then a smaller amount of Bestigor Flesh layer, then Fire Dragon Bright layer and last and certainly least (when it comes to the amount that was used) - Averland Sunset layer. As you can see the progression is from brown, to oranges to yellow.
Then: a wash. Brian is a big fan of mixing up his own lashes, and rather than using a simple brown, he decided to mix one, by combining Fuegan Orange shade, Druchii Violet shade and Biel-tan Green shade. This was then applied generously over all the rusted parts!

Green Armor Plates: To start with, Castellan Green base was painted over all the areas where the armor plates are. Death World Forest was then painted on top of that, leaving some of the Castellan Green in the recesses. Don't worry about avoiding all the spikes and bolts, though - you'll have to touch them up later. Next is the actual armor color and the only paint mix - 50/50 Death World Forest and Elysian Green. Then highlight with Elysian Green.

Red Areas: Decided to do an odd number of red areas, to complement the green. I chose to do the heads, shoulder pieces and the knee plates under the armor plates on each leg. Using the Mephiston Red base, which is basically like a 50/50 Mechrite Red and Blood Red color, I based the areas. It's ridiculous how good of a paint Mephiston Red is! It's bright, vibrant, covers like a charm - it doesn't have the dull, dark and slightly chalky texture which Mechrite Red had. When that dried I covered the base color with Evil Sunz Scarlet, which is a slightly orange red and it also covered very well!

Then all of the Green Armor plates and the Red Areas were washed with the same watered-down Rhinox Hide paint, trying to focus on some of the details that need the depth and definition.

Battle Damage - Using a sponge I then did some battle damage, using Rhinox Hide all over the model. I then went over that with some Boltgun Metal or whatever the equivalent of it is called now.. err.. Ironbreaker layer, I guess.

Metal - Ironbreaker layer again, maybe some dry-brushing with Necron Compound. Honestly, here you can experiment with the different metallic paints - copper, tin, metal. My metals are still not finished and there's plenty of black left where all the rusted parts are. At this point you just cover all the rust you don't want with metal and dry-brush to bring out all the various details.

There's some more washing that's needed to enhance the models' rust and the details of the armors, but that's for another article! :)
The Necrons are finally getting their Doom Scythe and Night Scythe kits; Codex: Space Marines is getting its very own flyer as well, represented by the Stormtalon; Orks are getting not one, not two but three sweet-looking Bommers, all of which come in the same kit.

And just a few hours ago, Puppets War, the Polish-based miniatures company which has been churning out amazing looking models by the dozens of as of late, released their second "Orc" flying machine...
The price is a little bit less than the GW fliers - $42.30/30.00€/£26.10. It's definitely worth it!

Man, what a great-looking flyer! The huuuuge engines are definitely a great addition and they just give so much character to the vehicle. It's crazy. I think that Puppets War should definitely sell JUST the engines as a separate bundle, because people will definitely want to use them to convert/modify the GW Ork Bommers. Now, I don't know my planes, but I'm sure this one is based on a real oomie plane of some kind.
This summer is truly the Summer of Flyers, folks!Skarvald the Troll-facedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00850398881112778705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423274338242244569.post-49650871949185113232012-05-25T00:00:00.000-07:002012-05-25T00:00:05.647-07:00Thoughts on the new Ork Flyers: The Dakkajet is da way to go!Hey there, folks, It's me again. With some of my thoughts on the this whole ACTUAL Summer o' Flierz. Again.

Now that we know what the rules for the Ork Flierz are, it's time to sit down and play favorites.
The Dakkajet, the Blitza-Bommer and the Burna-Bommer now have their very own, special entries in the new White Dwarf and there's even a cool Fast Attack page with all of their options and weaponry, which should fit just nicely between the pages of Codex: Orks.

And to answer some of the questions that I asked myself yesterday..
Yes. They are all Fast Attack choices. ;_;
No. They cannot be taken in Squadrons. ;_;

So which Bommer caught my eye after some perusing of the scans that are currently circulating the interwebs?

The Dakkajet

The Dakkajet is the cheapest Ork flier of them all, starting at just 110 points and actually has the most wargear options! Yep, he has three things to choose from and you might as well give it all of 'em.
It comes with x2 twin-linked supa shootas and with all of the special rules that the rest of the fliers have so.. Aerial Assault.. blah-blah-BLAH.. Supersonic and Waaaagh!plane.
...10 points get you a third twin-linked supa shoota.
That's 30'' S6 AP4 Assault 3, donchaknow!?
You definitely want them 9 S6 shots a turn, because.. that's pretty cool.
And they are twin-linked! And..and.. Strafing Run makes you BS3 if you're shooting non-jetbike, non-skimmer units/vehicles, although for for just 10 points you can get Fight Ace, basically making you BS3 against any targets. Hey, add to that the twin-linked factor and you've got yourself an Ork model that can actually glance the wide side of a barn! Darn!
Oh, and its supa shootas cause Pinning!

Pinning in Codex: Orks! Now that's something. Pinning is pretty unreliable, but with so many shots you're bound to kill something and force that Ld check.

What's my favorite thing about the Dakkajet, though is the Waaagh!plane rule. WAAAAAAGH and all of a sudden your Dakkajet is shooting 18 twin-linked S6 AP4 shots at BS3. That's... that's... awesome. Focus fire on that one annoying Tactical Squad and hope to pin it, or maneuver and shoot the rear armor of that pesky Rhino.. or pretty much any vehicle. That many S6 shots should do it!
And all of that for like.. ~130 points.

The rest of the vehicles are also pretty cool, but they are not as reliable, I think. Lower BS, less shots.
Although I definitely can see the Burna-Bommer doing some cool things with it's up to 6 (!!!) skorcha bombs. Like.. oh, I dunno.. completely incinerating mobs of Boyz and definitely pissing in the cheerios of your opponent's Canoptek Swarms with your burna bombs (S5 AP4 Heavy 1, Large Blast, Ignores Cover)...

That's it for now.

Dakkajets are awesome.
The rumor for the Ork flyers, as well as the new Space Marine flyer and the Necron Scythe variants has been all over the interwebs for the past month or so - pretty much ever since Beasts of War had a live discussion about them, featuring drawings of the models, which now seem to be basically traced images of the actual kits. That was pretty cool. A lot of people thought it was just a giant joke, especially with the outlines of the Space Marine Stormtalon er.. Gunship? It seems to be sharing the fate of the Stormraven from a few year ago - basically people are swearing that they'll never buy it due to its ugliness, only to give in to the temptation and its ruleset a few weeks after its release.
Personally? I don't care. I'm not even going to post a picture of it, since it's really easy to find it anyways, plus it's going to dilute my point..
And now, for the Ork Bommerz..
There are three Ork Bommer variants, all of which come in the same kit, which is nice. They should become available for pre-order on the GW website in a couple of days, cost $45.50 each and are going to come out on June 2nd..
1) Blitza-Bommer - "a dive bommer used to deploy payloads at low altitude and high speed" seems to be a hybrid flyer/skimmer with some pretty big "bommz" and a few er.. supa shootas? I'm guessing that it's going to be similar to the Dark Eldar flyers with an assortment of different bommz with different profiles and blast sizes, but it will probably have less options and will compensate with quantity rather than quality, which is da Orky way. It will probably be able to drop all of its "payloads" in one turn and then it will fly around shooting rokkitz or other similar weapons at the enemy.
The name speaks for itself - the Dakkajet is all about the dakka and it seems to have at least 4 types of shootas, two of which seem like regular big shootas, while the other ones (on the wings) are probably the supa shootas. Now, I have no idea what a supa shoota is, but... Anyways, I managed to find some rumored stats and rules for the damn thing, but in it it mentioned dakka guns, instead of the listed "dakka guns". When I saw the picture and the description, the Dakkajet really struck me as an anti-aircraft type of vehicle, so here's hoping its weaponry functions similar to the Hydra in Codex: Imperial Guard.
A lot of people have been asking and waiting for this release. I know I have. Ork Aircrafts have always been my favorite thing, but I have never expanded on my love for orky planes. As a matter of fact, it was the Deff Kopta model from the Assault on Black Reach set that pretty much sealed the deal and got me started with Orkz and Warhammer 40,000 in general. It's just such a sweet, sweet model and I want to field lotz of 'em. ALL OF THEM. A GOTTA HAVE 'EM ALL, YOU SEE? I want at least a 100... Help me?
So anywaaay...

All three kits look pretty cool to me. I'll have to agree that they do look kind of similar, but there are three variants in one box, after all. Imagine all the extra bitz inside? From the pictures you can tell that there are 2-3 different pairs of wings and tails, which can be used not only to differentiate your various flyers (because, let's face it, you're going to buy at least 2 of 'em...), but you can use the extra wings to Loot other vehicles and turn them into Orky flyers. Got a spare Tau Piranha? Add wings to it, it's now a Dakkajet. AND you'll have tons of spare shootas and rokkitz to kustomize it.

One of the main complaints on the interwebz is that they are kind of simple and plain. Again - 3 kits in one box. That, and I actually like their plain profile. It means that you can easily add stuff to them - extra weapons, gubbinz, wires, wheels, wings, plates, glyphs.. etc. etc. If anything, they are going to make converting your very own Orky flyer that much easier, because you'll have the main components as reference or simply as something to built on top of. Just the release of this kit will unleash a bran new wave of Ork conversions all over the world, mark my word!

Rules-wise.. nothing too crazy. After all they are xeno vehicles, they are obviously not going to be crazy over-the-top overpowered. Aerial Assault and Supersonic are definitely cool, but are certainly now unique and every flyer seems to have them. Waaagh! plane is amazing! I don't care if it's going to be good or not, the very fact that this vehicles gets to do something cool when you declare your Waaaaagh is just phenomental and I really hope that more non-infantry units in the Ork codex get similar treatment in 6th edition. We're obviously going to see many of the typical Orky upgrades as options: Armour Plates, Grot Riggers, Red Paint Job.. etc. Probably options for extra guns or for making weapons twin-linked.

I kind of wish they can be fielded as a Squadron. Come on.. how awesome would that be? 9 Ork flyers.. just 'cause. It wouldn't even be overpowered. No, really. We're talking about AV 10/10/10 vehicles here. I just want to be able to field a bunch of them. Which brings me to yet another pondering..

AV 10/10/10 is a bummer.. 11/11/11 would be soooo much better. Oh, well. At least they are not open-topped. Oh, that would be an even bigger bummer.

No variant with transport capabilities is a bummer. Perhaps in the near future? Yeah..... right.

Are they Fast Attack or Heavy Support?
Fast Attack seems to be the sane choice, simply because they are well.. fast. But then they are competing with a lot of fast units, which are all pretty decent in Codex: Orkz - Deff Koptas, Warbikerz, Nob Bikerz.. even Buggiez... and I definitely want to be able to run a bunch of Ork flyers... with a bunch of Deff Koptas. Dakkawing, baby!

6th Edition Caveats:
While the vehicles ARE sweet, we have no idea how flyers, skimmers and even vehicles in general are going to function in 6th edition. Are there even going to be Fast Attack or Heavy Support slots or is the game going to adopt the percentage system of Warhammer Fantasy? Buying a bunch of vehicles right now seems kind of risky and definitely dangerous, simply because 6th can (and probably will) turns everything upside down. This is why I won't be picking them up immediately and I'll wait until the new edition rolls out. I know that I'll be picking some up for sure, I just don't want to do it right now. I think that a lot of you will agree with my fears..

After game 3 ended, we were definitely feeling much better. I guess swift victory and carnage will do that.. Still hoping not to face any more Grey Knights (and perhaps Imperial Guard, because they are always annoying..) we picked up our stuff and headed towards our final destination....
It was time to meet our last opponents for the event with the hope of a fun, challenging game to end the tournament with.
And then, Fate smiled upon us once again for we were destined to face..
Our second clash was at Rock-Con 2011 where Gitsplitta and I played in the Gentleman's Grand Tournament where despite both of us hoping to duke it out, we were left with the hope to finally play a game at Adepticon 2012. At Rock-Con he also brought his Mantis Warriors to dispense so indiscriminate justice upon all the xenos, renegades and tons of Grey Knights..
Wardens of the Maelstrom clearly had a few things in common - love for the hobby and dedication to detail were amongst them, but the first thing that I noticed was the common theme of their armies. The Wardens had 4 Adeptus Astrartes armies, all based on four different Space Marine Chapters from the Badab War Era. That's right! There were Mantis Warriors, Carcharadons (aka Space Sharks), Minotaurs and Lamenters to boot, all of which were beautifully painted and fancied themselves quite the display board..
Solar_lion also brought the might of the sons of Sanguinius of the Lamenter variety, except his list had even more death and sorrow! A Reclusiarch with 5 Death Company meanies in a Stormraven Gunship WITH a Death Company Dreadnought jerk-face attached to its hip! Two 5-man Assault Squads and then a Vindicator.. Oh my. Tons of delicious stuff!

As you can see, there were plenty of dangerous elements in the Wardens' arsenal. Two Vindicators and a Death Company Dreadnought were something that I was definitely not too excited to face with my cavalcade of Thunderwolves, but I knew that Vince and I had it in us.

Mission #4 was Bloodbath in Paradise! Probably my favorite mission!
Deployment was standard Spearhead with an Objective markers in each neutral corner - controlling them was the Tertiary Objective. Secondary was having the most units entirely within the opposing Team's deployment zone (table quarter). And the Primary Objective was the Marked for Death Annihilation thingamajigger, similar to game 5 from Adepticon 2011! Basically, each Coalition picked an opponent whose army was the only part of the Coalition worth any Kill Points.

Since Gitsplitta had less vehicles and more Kill Points, we chose him to be our Marked for Death target, and the Warden's targeted Vince's Blood Angels as theirs. Now, Vince and I had some experience with this scenario, having played against a team of Space Wolves and Blood Angels before with basically the same set of rules and objectives... We didn't get to play together during that game, but we knew what we were doing for sure. And this time we were the hybrid team playing against and all-Blood Angels team.
Oh, and Command Tokens definitely had a unique ability, which I'm guessing was added this year to give armies without any Psychic protection an edge against Psyker-heavy armies *cough*Grey Knights*cough*.. A unit with a command token had the following ability: "All enemy Psykers within 12'' of the model bearing a Command Token must roll and extra die when taking Psychic tests, suffering Perils of the Warp on any roll of 12 or above."
My Thunderwolves and one of Vince's Assault Squads took a Command Token each.

Deployment:
We got to set up first, I believe. My Long Fangs I put on top of some cliffs, my Rhino was positioned behind some cover and my Thunderwolves were eager as ever to eat some Blood Angels... but preferably not Vince's. I can't remember what Vince did with his Blood Angels, but I am pretty sure that they were on the table, although one of his Assault Squads could have been Deep Striking.

The Wardens deployed everything. Two Vindicators behind terrain, a Stormraven too far for my Long Fangs to reach it and a bunch of tiny Assault Squads all over the place.

We went first and the first turn was pretty uneventful, because my Longs Fangs were out of range and Living Lightning didn't do anything. My Rune Priest's Rhino was slowly moving towards the opponent's Deployment Quarter. Vince positioned his Death Star in some cover, knowing that the enemy had a Drop Pod with some veeeeeeery shooty dudes. The question was - were they going to commit those 3 Kill Points to killing Vince's 3 Kill Points and then do their best to stay away from my army or were they going to try and get rid of my Thunderwolves with a good round of shooting? OR were they going to send the Drop Pod in their very Deployment Zone?

A picture's worth a thousand words, they say..

The picture above should give you a concrete answer. Gitsplitta decided to go Baals Deep and purge Vince's golden Honor Guard+Librarian+Sanguinary Priest nonsense. This is actually identical to what happened during game 4 to my Thunderwolves in '11.. but I digress. The Drop Pod landed a few inches away from their target and some of the Wardens' elements also moved.. all over the place. Their Vindicators were afraid of my Long Fangs for some reason, so they kept their distance and LoS. The Stormraven shot a Plasma Cannon towards Vince's Angels but cover saves were made..
And then Gitsplitta unleash a torrent of AP3, AP2 and Melta stuff into the Honor Guard and we got to teach our opponents a lesson in wound allocation when there are many types of shots. We were able to minimize casualties by carefully assigning all the low AP stuff on only a couple of models and after a ton of cover saves and Feel No Pain saves were made, Vince's unit was definitely hurt but still standing, which was unfortunate for Gitsplitta.

Turn 2
Time to deal with the Sternguard problem.

The Honor Guard had to get the heck out of there - it was time for it to hide for the rest of the game. Our shooting was too little, too late.
My Thunderwolves decided to take a detour and get a free consolidation move after slaughtering the Sternguard, while one of Vince's Assault Squads decided to pitch in with some meltas, destroying the Drop Pod. Skarvald and his retinue charged into the ranks of the Mantis Warriors, slaying many before they could respond to his ferocity and with almost no casualties, the Thundewolves dealt with the Sternguard problem, getting a nice 6'' consolidation for their troubles.
Their Vincdicators moved forward, but were still very careful. The Storm Raven was now in the lower right neutral corner, taking pot shots at Vince's Assault Squad and actually killing quite a few with its Plasma Cannon.

The Thundewolves spread out and moved forward, guarding the Rhino, which was also moving forward. At this point my Long Fangs were not in range and decided to book it towards the enemy. Turned out to be the right move later in the game. This is where Vince's Assault Squad moved towards the enemy, ready to pounce on it and pounce he did, eating a small 5-man Assault Squad, completely aware of what was going to happen next.

Like I said, my Thunderwolves were not petty spread out at this point, expecting one or two S10 pie plates headed their way by the scary, scary Fast Vindicators... This is what our opponent's lines looked like, by the way:

Wardens of the Maelstrom's Turn 3 was a turn of counter-charges and some revenge. The Storm Raven moved towards Vince's Assault Squad and unloaded it's deadly cargo. Just the Death Company Dreadnought was enough to rip the already hurt squad to shreds, though.
The Vindicators were unsuccessful at damaging my Thunderwolves. Cover saves and a Storm Shield for the win, baby! At this point, the Wardens had us in their territory and we had to be careful!

Vince's 10-man Assault Squad was not moving from the top left Objective Marker, though.

Turn 4

At this point I actually decided to spread the love and sent Skarvald himself towards another pack of Blood Angels, but I don't remember of what color, haha. The Grey Hunters disembarked and shot at the Vindicator, but I don't really remember if I destroyed it or if I got a Weapon Destroyed result. Either way, it was now useless.

After this the game is kind of a blur. A few lucky shots from my Long Fangs immobilized the Death Company Dreadnougth and my Thunderwolves ate a unit of Mantis Warriors while Skarvald chewed through an Assault Squad of Lamenters. Or at least I think it was a Lamenters squad.

Oh, oh, oh! I should also mention that Solar_lion's Stormraven totally got immobilized on top of impassable terrain and then died! That was a sad turn of events for him... For us? Not so much!
The Reclusiarch finished off my wounded Thunderwolves and then survived the shooting that came from the Grey Hunter and killed them as well. Skarvald eventually died in combat, but not after killing many more Blood Angels. He couldn't slay Gitsplitta's Librarian, which was unfortunate, but at this point. Honestly, the game was filled with tons of sweet battles, challenges and just bloody massacres. Like it should be!
We definitely had the most Kill Points during that game, so the Primary was ours. The Secondary objective was also ours, since we had my Rhino in the Warden's deployment zone, which was more than they had in our zone. The Tertiary was also ours, because we managed to corner and surround the Wardens, pushing them away from their objective, while at the same time they never sent any resources towards our objective. With all three objectives secured we had achieved yet another..
Man, the Wardens of the Maelstrom were seriously some cool opponents to play against and I am totally mad that we can't play games like that on a regular basis due to distance and whatnot. It's actually pretty impressive how the four of them managed to organize themselves as a Team using DakkaDakka, especially with such impressive results. The armies were great. The generals were great. The game were great. There was definitely some smack talk and a few laughs during our game. I don't think any of us played for the win, at least not in a WAAC kind of way - it was the 4th and last game, we were all very, very tired and/or innebriated (although I was not as drunk as I should have been or I wanted to be...). I hope to play against Gitsplitta and his crew again in the future, simply because this is what wargaming should always be.

And with this battle reports I end my Adepticon coverage. I might blog about the convention itself in the next couple of days, though. We shall see. We shall see.
Still recuperating from finals and about to begin the work week, so while you guys are waiting for the 4th and final game from my Adepticon 2012 Team Tournament coverage, why don't you take a look at my brand spankin' new Battle Reports page? You know, the one beneath the sweet header image thing with Skarvald the Troll-faced's pretty mug onnit? Yeah, that one. Click on it. Cliiiick on it.
You know you want too...

Honestly, I like to think that I'm pretty good at writing battle reports. They do end up being pretty verbose, but are always dripping with gory detail and there are also some pretty nifty pictures to boot. I do spend a long time writing them, so I'd appreciate any and all the comments you guys can give me.

Just some reading material for the summer, you know?

Soon I hope to write a few more and will even branch out to Warmachine battle reports featuring my slowly growing Khador army.Skarvald the Troll-facedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00850398881112778705noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4423274338242244569.post-12946983801321318442012-05-11T01:05:00.000-07:002012-05-11T01:05:31.969-07:00Adepticon 2012, Part III: Team Tournament, Game 3 vs. Da Boyz Wolfpack.. in which Skarvald the Troll-faced and his Thunderwolf Retinue reap a great tally and once again bask in the glory that is victory, even if taken from the dying hands of fellow Space Wolves.

Whoa, holy foreshadowing, Batman!

As stated in my last battle report from Game 2, my team really, really, really didn't want to face yet another Grey Knights team. Our opponents were fair and sportsmanlike with well-painted armies, but we were tired of facing the abominations of Matt Ward and we actually wanted to stand a chance for once. Besides, winning a game for once would have been nice, at least for me. A 0-2 streak is not fun..

So after nursing a few delicious Czech beers, one cold and one slightly toasty Corona, a shot of Jägermeister and a nice glass of Captain Morgan I <strike>realized I had a drinking problem</strike> was ready to face my new opponents and to ingloriously flip the table over and storm out like some kind of a bastard if I had to fight any more Grey Knights.

And whaddaya know, lads, Fate decided to grace my team with its 24-carrat smile once again, showing us that although MEQ armies were the 99% of Adepticon 2012 it was not all about jerks in silver. Enter team...

.. who contrary to what it seems brought only Space Wolves to the fight. Oh, and what a fight it was.

This time I was paired with my buddy Vince, who has been one of my regular opponents ever since our little group starter playing Warhammer 40,000. Him and I go a way back and as such we had some synergy... And by synergy I mean that we both played two very "Go for the throat" armies with few models and were slightly inebriated to boot. Now.. I didn't care much for Da Boyz' lists. Their army looked pretty sweet as you can clearly see above, painted the Old School way and what not. I liked that. I guess what I meant to say is that they were playing Space Wolves.

I wasn't going to lose to another Space Wolves army. I've played more than a 100 games with a list similar to what I was fielding without a single loss to a Space Wolves army. Today was NOT going to be my first loss against the Sons of Russ. Skarvald the Troll-faced was going to reap a great tally and his name was going to be remembered in the Great Halls as a VICTOR.

Da Boyz Wolfpack brought a pretty standard Rhino Rush list. Both players (Trevor and Jameson) brought two almost identical list with a total of 6 Rhinos filled with 6-7 Grey Hunters with your typical Wolf Banner, Meltagun, Mark of the Wulfen equipment, although the addition of a Power Weapon in each squad was something I hadn't seen before. Each squad had a Wolf Guard in Power Armour with a combi-meltagun and a Power Fist and their HQ's of choice were Rune Priests - one with a Chooser of the Slain, Murgerous Hurricane and Living Lightning and one with Jaws the of the World Wolf and Murderious Hurricane. Oh, and 2 Long Fangs squads - one with x4 Missile Launchers and one with x2 Lascannons and x3 Missile Launchers.

Vince brought his beautifully painted Blood Angels. Three whole squads of 'em! Led by a Librarian with the Sanguine Sword and the Blood Lance, his army was bedazzled with Jump Packs, with 2 10-man (I think) blobs of Assault Marines with all their belts and whistles and then a mini Death Star of fully-decked out Honor Guard WITH a Sanguinary Priest attached to boot. I really like the paint-job of his Sanguinary Priest who has some pretty smooth-lookin' white power armor. Actually his Honor Guard is also all-sorts-of-awesome with their GOLDEN armor. Hm, I should have taken more pictures of his army. By the way, you can toooootally tell that Vince and I have played many, many games together.. We love our Death Stars. It's how we win our games, hahaha.. Oh, you'll see in a bit. You'll see...

Turn #1 was Dawn of War, which was pretty annoying for my Thunderwolves and Skarvald (since they had to come in from the table edge) and my Long Fangs. Luckily our opponents also had Long Fangs as their only long-ranger firepower (minus Living Lightning.. but.. come on now) so it was clear that no one was even going to bother with Acute Nonsense.. To be honest, though I actually liked this kind of setup, because I was going to be relatively alone on turn 1 and possibly 2, since Vince's entire army was going to Deep Strike!

There were 3 objective markers - One was the Alpha Objective (Primary) and two were the Beta Objectives (Secondary). Extra points were awarded for controlling the Beta objectives with a Command Token-bearing unit. +3 points were awarded for a Coalition Commander within 3'' of the Alpha objective at the end of the game.

Deployment

Da Boyz Wolfpack managed to roll higher than us and chose the side they were already on. Their deployment was quick since.. you know.. Dawn of War. They did the old trick with the empty Rhinos 8 or so inches away from the table edge, so yeah.. Two rhinos and what was it.

During our deployment I was the only one that could field anything, so I fielded the only eligible unit I had - the Rhino transporting my Rune Priest with his Grey Hunters. The rest of my army (The Longs Fangs and the Thunderwolves led by Skarvald the Troll-faced) were coming on turn 1 and all of Vince's Blood Angels were Deep Striking.

And then... I stole the Initiative!

Turn 1

Yeah, that game my dice were on fire!

My Thunderwolves came in first and rolled decently for their run move, without bothering to hide in cover since no shooting was going to be happening on turn 1 anyways. My Long Fangs derped with their difficult terrain and running so it was going to take them an extra turn to get on top of some cliffs in order to be able to see anything. Oh well.

Da Boyz Wolfpack then rolled out all of their vehicles: ALL SIX OF THEM. This is where it's important to say that we were outnumbered and out-vehicle'd with way more bodies and potential shots of all calibers. A game of Hide and Seek was going to be a lost game for us, so we had to bring the fight to THEM. One Rhino with the Rune Priest and some Grey Hunters rolled forward, trying to lure my Thunderwolves to get a risky charge at it. They knew we were going to go for it, simply because he had to. It was the way of Russ!

Turn 2

Vince's Death Star arrived and he positioned them pretty accurately on our left flank, behind enemy lines and near a nest of Long Fangs protected by two Rhinos. My Thunderwolves moved and ran forward, trying to create a wall of flesh that would prevent the four nearby Rhinos from going towards the Alpha objective. My Rhino then moved forward and if it attempted to shoot at anything I don't remember.. Oh, my derpy Long Fangs got on top of the cliffs but couldn't shoot.

Vince then rolled for a Blood Lance and the nearby Rune Priest failed to stop it (a common trend this game...). Then, on 4d6 Vince rolled a total of 18 inches, clipping 3 Long Fangs and a Rhino. The Long Fangs disappeared, but Vince rolled a 1 to pen the Rhino, so nothing happened there. Still, not a bad round of shooting, eh?

My Thunderwolves then rolled to charge the Rhino-bait and got a successful charge, needing 6's to hit. Skarvald the Troll-faced then rolled his 7 attacks and managed to immobilize the Rhino, allowing the Thunderwolves to wreck it with rending attacks before the Thunder hammer guy even got to swing. The Rune Priest and his posse disembarked just fine out of it..

And this is where the insanity begins!!!!

Like true Space Wolves, Da Boyz brought the fight to us.

The trap was sprung and after the Rune Priest's squad moved to the side three other squads of Grey Hunters disembarked and moved out of their Rhinos towards my Thunderwolves!!!

The two nearby Rhinos next to Vince's Honor Guard also disembarked next to the Blood Angels.

They then unleash hell on us.

A lonely Rune Priest inside a Rhino cast Jaws of the World Wolf on my Thunderwolves and I was too far with my Rune Priest to stop it, so the spell ended up devouring 2 of my Thunderwolves.

A pack of Grey Hunters then shot 6 bolt pistols and 2 melta guns at the Thunderwolves.

A Rhino then shot 2 Storm Bolter shots at the Thunderwolves.

The same happened to Vince by the two nearby Grey Hunter packs.

My Thunderwolves suffered a wound on everyone except for the Thunder Hammer guy who was extra pissed off since he couldn't even swing at the Rhino. He wasn't going down without a fight. Skarvald also had one wound on him.

Then 3 of the Grey Hunter packs used their Wolf Banners and charged into my Thunderwolves. Ugh, I was going to need some seriously broken dice rolls any minuted now.. Rolled and got my Counter Attack and then it was time for Skarvald the Troll-faced to swing at the invaders. All of his 7 attacks hit and wounded, leaving only the Wolf Guard in one of the packs... Okay, so far so good. Then everyone else except for the Thunder Hammer guy and the Wolf Guards with Power Fists swung and when the smoke cleared many more Grey Hunters were dead and only the Thunder Hammer guy and Skarvald the Troll-faced were left. Skarvald was then taken out after suffering a few unsaved power wounds and my Thunder Hammer guy, the lone survivor swung at the same time with one of the power fist guys. The hammer smashed 2 or 3 additional Grey Hunters and the Wolf Guard managed to score only a single would on my last Thunderwolf. So basically one Thunderwolf with only 1 wound remaining won combat against three Grey Hunter squads, winning by 5!!! Two of them ran away from the fight, while the third one was stuck in close combat with only a few guys remaining.

That was just.. so.. so.. SO lucky. A perfectly executed strategy by the book by Da Boyz Wolfpack gone wrong due to some bad dice-rolling on their part and some amazing saves and attacks on my part. That turn 2 was basically the deciding factor. Either the 3 squads of Grey Hunters were going to overwhelm my Thunderwolves and then camp the Alpha Objective or I was going to rend them to death and run around kicking ass and taking names.

And to top it off Vince won the assault against the Grey Hunters who were just obliterated by a ton of power weapons and many, many Feel No Pain saves, running off the table. So.. at the end of turn 5 Da Boyz had two Troops choices off the table, 1 big pack Falling Back, a 2-man pack Falling Back and, a severely damaged pack in close combat with my Thunderwolf and one unscathed pack in the middle of the board. WOW.

Turn 3

Vince's Assault Squads arrived - one behind what was left of the enemy's lines on our right flank and the other one.. wherever. It was time to make sure those two packs of Grey Hunters were runnin'. Vince detached his Librarian from his Death Star because only one model could squeeze through a wall of Rhinos while staying an inch away from them. My Grey Hunters occupied the Alpha Objective and Living Lightning popped a Rhino. Vince's Assault Squad popped a Rhino. The other one shot at something as well. The Librarian then cast a 20'' inch Blood Lance which was not blocked by the Rune Priest and killed 3 more Long Fangs. My Long Fangs didn't do anything.

The Librarian then assaulted the damaged Long Fangs and what was left of the Honor Guard with the Sanguinary Priest assaulted the other Long Fangs. Both squads were then dead and the Librarian moved within 6'' of the big fleeing pack of Grey Hunters. We couldn't really ensure that the 2 surviving Grey Hunters were going to be fleeing, though.

The Thunderwolf? He survived the few attacks against them and then smashed the Grey Hunters in the face, caused them to flee and then Swept them, getting a 1'' consolidation. What a bro.

On their turn Da Boyz did all they could. The big pack of grey Hunters fled off the table. The Grey Hunter/Wolf Guard combo regrouped and got inside the Rhino in which the Rune Priest was camping. The Rhinos didn't really matter, since they couldn't really block LoS or paths and there weren't that many of them to begin with. So.. the big blob of plasma Grey Hunters shot Vince's Librarian to death and the Rune Priest cast Murderious Hurricane on my Thunderwolf after a bunch of Storm Bolters failed to kill him. Aaaand.. turn!

Turn 4

Praying not to get a "1" my Thunderwolf moved and ran towards the Rhino and survived!

The two blobs of Assault Marines started to move and surrounded the Space Wolves. One of them was going to have some fun with the big squad of Space Wolves. Shooting-wise we dropped a few Gey Hunters, immobilized the Rhino of the Rune Priest.

Vince then assaulted the Grey Hunters and I assaulted the immobilized Rhino with my Thunderwolf rider with a Thunder Hammer. 5 S10 attacks later the Rhino exploded, but didn't wound my dude.

On their Turn 4, one of the members of Da Boyz surrendered. There really wasn't anything that they could do, but I still didn't want him to surrender. I actually encouraged him to at least go all "Old Yeller" on my Thunderwolf and kill it. Before scooping the guy really did manage to kill my Thunderwolf and so.. the game ended.

Since our opponents surrendered we actually got full points for the game. It was a bloody massacre with many casualties and just.. overall Thunderwolf silliness. My Death Star died again but not without basically winning us the game on Turn 2. Add some crazy strategic shenanigans and the rest was just ensuring that as many Space Wolves died in battle..

Even though I hate it when people surrender I still had a blast. We all had a laugh about the ridiculousness. Da Boyz are actually quite a nice gang and it was very interesting to hear what they had to say about the game and just to chat with them in general. They also gave each of us a pair of their own fancy Orky dice. I've been using them ever since, especially while playing Warmachine.
